Prince Christian Sound

Image
Today we took a scenic cruise about 60 miles through Prince Christian Sound.  Two weeks ago this ship entered from the south and ultimately had to retrace their way back out, because the eastern exit was blocked by too much ice.  Today we were able to take the through trip.  We saw magnificent peaks and glaciers and icebergs, and the color of the water was constantly changing. We saw a very remote Inuit settlement. And even a weather station at the eastern exit, with antennas all over. We passed only one other ship the whole day. She was a former Holland America ship, the Prinzdam, now owned by a different company. This evening we had a gala dinner celebrating Holland America’s 150th year.  After supper we attended a dance performance and the rock and roll band playing hits from the 1970s. Good night!

Nanortalik part 2

For some reason, I could not continue on my previous post! Once again we saw lovely flowers! I guess that figures, because nothing taller than grass grows here, not even a bush!  And we saw no animals other than a pet dog, although the town’s name means “place of the polar bears.”  We were surprised and delighted to find some large bluebonnets here! You can click on any of the images and enlarge them. We also saw lichen of many beautiful colors. U

Nanortalik, Greenland part 1

Today was a pleasant day! Sunday, so we went to 8:00 a.m. mass.  Although we do not commune out of respect for our Roman brothers and sisters, the liturgy is more relatable to us than the Baptist service.   We had no land excursion scheduled, so we took our time going onshore in Nanortalik. It was about the same size (1,000-1,200) as Maapiut yesterday. There were a few sellers of handmade beaded crafts, but nothing caught our eyes.  Disappointing, because I really wanted to bring home a souvenir!   We saw more of the brightly colored buildings.

Paamiut, Greenland

In the background on the left is the Zuiderdam.  Farther out to see and on the right are icebergs, and in the foreground is one of the tenders.  This morning we took a 2 mile walking tour through this small town.  It was hard to learn much except when we were in the immediate vicinity of the guide, who was extremely soft spoken.  None of the groceries or shops were labeled as such, because in a town of 1200, everyone knows where everything is. 😂. Unless you don’t. It is a colorful town; they all love bright colors. Notice in front of the boat an old sod-covered house. There is one church in the center of town. I didn’t catch her name, but she is charming. Paul says he finally found a pew more uncomfortable than Holy Ghost Lutheran’s. I guess I should not be surprised to find a pipe organ in a Danish territory. The weather here is very fair. We dressed in layers, as we were advised, but we quickly shed them. It was about 45-50 degrees.  We also heard that the mo...

Food and waking up in Paamiut, Greenland

Image
People take pictures of their food on cruise ships.  I don’t really get it, but so I don’t stray too far from the norm, here are some courses from last night’s meal in the Dining Room. Deviled eggs  Chili Rellenos  Cod Paul’s dessert This morning was the first in three days that was not foggy.  We awoke to the starkness of Greenland, icebergs in the distance, and breaching whales.  I took a video of the latter and accidentally deleted it. 😟
