Shipboard Life

Someone asked me about a month before this cruise what I was looking forward to the most about cruising. I answered somewhat weakly that it was the luxury of being waited on all the time.  But that’s not really the answer.

In many ways we live life more intensely on a cruise ship. From the time we get up until the time we go to bed there are wonderful and interesting options. Not just the option of the Dining Room, where we can enjoy a leisurely and delicious meal, or the two specialty restaurants, but also the amazing buffet on Lido deck.

We prefer to attend lectures and W&A sessions on the places we are about to visit, to gain insight and tips on what makes them unique.  We also have a career naval officer on board who gives interesting talks about ships.

We have attended three comedy shows with three comedians. They were all terrific, but of note was the guy who did an hysterical sketch about lost airplane luggage using only the properly tagged handle of his bag for a prop! (Did you pack your own bag? Do you think anyone interfered with your luggage?). The comedians are forbidden by contract from doing outright vulgar shows, which is a relief. And it goes to show that much of life is just plain humorous when looked at from the right perspective.

Music is an option most any time of day. I especially enjoy the duo on pianos, who play various themes of music at their three shows several nights a week. There is a rock band that plays frequently, as well, and they also do blues and soul. I admire the versatility of these musicians!  I have attended the concert of a piano and cello duo performing music that came out of the intense suffering of the holocaust. Surprisingly, the music was mainly cheerful and pretty, demonstrating the human spirit’s resilience and ability to rise above present circumstances.

I hope this gives you a taste of what I enjoy about cruising.
