August 1 - at sea

Today we are at sea, headed for Iceland.  This morning it was hard to distinguish where the sea ended and the sky began. Even my camera was confused and I had to give it a moment to focus.

See how glassy the sea looks in the foreground? The captain says it is like that only 4% of the time.  We had smooth sailing all day, and as the day went on the sea and sky became more defined.

We attended a few presentations during the day. The first was about three modern day Scandinavian explorers.  We learned about Liv Anesson, a woman from Norway, who was the first to ski all 745 miles to the South Pole.  It took her 50 days in 1994, solo.

Then we heard about Swede Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, but also the founder of the Nobel prizes, thanks to his great wealth and generosity.

Finally we heard about Danish Tara Wike, a senior design manager at Lego.  Interesting!

Next I went to a Q&A session on our upcoming two ports, Isafjordur (eee SAF yor fur), “ice fjord.”  And Akareyri.  I am excited to visit them both.

In the evening we had a reservation at Canaletto, the Italian specialty restaurant.

This is my tiger shrimp appetizer. The picture is deceptive, because you can’t see the two huge shrimp under the garnish!

This was Paul’s main course of shrimp, and it was delicious. He also ordered a plate of green vegetables!

Paul’s appetizer was veal and sausage meatballs in, naturally, a tomato sauce.

My main course was Mediterranean Sea Bass, yummy!

Paul’s Chocolate Nutella tart

My lemon ricotta cheesecake.

We were happy campers when all was said and done!

We were not enthused about the entertainment offerings for this evening, so we opted for an early night. We have a shore excursion at 8a.m.  One thing I haven’t mentioned is that nearly every day the ship’s clocks are set forward a half hour to an hour. It gets confusing, because my watch and our cell phones do not automatically update, so we have to add time to what they say. It makes a real difference when we have to set an alarm for an early wake up!

Good night!
